Vintage Buttons & Sewing Items

We hope you enjoy our collection of vintage sewing items. We are always on the look out for interesting buttons in bakelite, celluloid, rhinestone, crystal, and mother of pearl. We will also include other vintage and antique sewing ephemera and accessories such as thimbles, buckles, button covers, button hooks and other goodies we find.

This is a set of sterling silver domed button covers. They are Native American hand made stamped or etched pieces with a star pattern. Great gift for collectors, most likely made by the Navajo. Vintage  Sold as a set of 5. See a close up, See another view.

These are wonderful light sapphire blue glass buttons. They are eight sided and facetted, with a small hole in the center. They have a self shank on the back. See view A, B.

Here is a lovely set of four hand painted porcelain buttons or studs. These beautiful oval buttons have pale blue and white flowers painted on them and are framed with a gilt border. Each hand painted button shows slight artist variations. One of the buttons has a hairline crack, but it is still very stable. Overall they have survived in very good condition with minimal paint loss. Sold as a set of 4. See a close up, See another view, See the back. Circa 1880.

These small black glass buttons are really special. They are shaped like small flowers and are very popular for embellishing and adding to doll's clothing. They still have the original tag that says "Made in Germany-U.S.-Zone" (1947). They come 100 to a strand or packages of 24 pieces.

These are a set of 3 Large Gray Crystal Buttons. They are a nice clear gray color with facets and grooves cut in an Art Deco Design. They are an interesting diamond shape with the corners cut off. The back has a self shank. Sold in a set of 3. See the back.

Fabulous set of domed rhinestone buttons. Silver colored metal buttons with glued in clear foiled rhinestones. They have some tarnish on the edges, but we will leave that for you to clean. All rhinestones are intact. They have shanks on the backs. You get a set of 5 buttons. See view A, B.

These adorable bakelite buttons are a lovely soft butterscotch color. They are perfect for embellishing, quilting and crafts. They look fabulous with a bead in the center. These buttons came from a mercantile store that closed in 1940 and have been in a clean storage area ever since. Sold in packs of 8.

Nice old belt buckle that is made of a light wood or maybe paper mache. It has an embossed design in it. Click here to see the back.

Dark butterscotch bakelite belt buckle in an art deco shape. Made for a leather, cloth or ribbon belt to fold over it.

Red Velvet pin cushion decorated with flowers and faux jewels. it has a domed red velvet center in a gold tone setting. It is marked Florenza on the back. ~ See the back.

Black plastic belt buckle with clear rhinestones accenting it. Made for a leather, cloth or ribbon belt to fold over it. See the back. Circa 1960's

This lovely buckle is large enough for a man but yet small enough for a woman as well. It is beautifully chased metal with a place for a monogram. It has a dark patina and some scratches. It is unmarked, but tested as sterling silver. It is for a belt that is ½-¾ inches wide. Circa 1940's

Here's a pretty dark brown Bakelite cloak or coat clasp. Each side is 1 1/4" long by 1" wide. The pieces are curved and deeply carved with geometric designs. There are two metal loop shanks on the back of each side for sewing it onto fabric. These pieces were used on fur coats or heavy cloaks in the early 1900's. Tested and guaranteed to be Bakelite. Great surface and patina, the metal does show a little age. See view A, B, C.

These old buttons were found at an estate sale.  They are black Lucite with a self shank and they have a large rhinestone in the center. In unused condition

This is a vintage Swarovski crystal rivoli button in a silver filigree base that also has a rim of clear crystals. (shank on back)

This unusual Bakelite buckle is chocolate brown and is deeply carved in an art deco fashion. The backs have metal clips to fasten it and metal bars to thread a leather or fabric belt through. So easy to use- fabulous to wear. Great surface and patina, the metal does show a little age. See back

Beautiful black glass hematite cabochons from Germany. These are large domed glass pieces have square shaped facets with a hematite like finish that makes the facets sparkle. The opposite side is a button back with a rim for gluing. They are straight out the original old box. See view A, B. Vintage - 1950's

Dated from 1901-07, these domed Indian Head pennies have been hammered into button covers.  Use them as they were intended or get creative.  Great gift for coin collectors. Vintage  Sold as a pair: 1 pair available.

Lovely American, antique gold thimble made by Stern Bros. of New York City between 1890-1908. (before they merged with Goldsmith and became Goldsmith Stern Co.) It is engraved on the band with flowers, leaves, and the initials C.M. It is marked with an anchor and 7 on the inside. Tests as 10K gold. ~ See initials; See close up; See inside

Fabulous set of domed rhinestone buttons. Silver colored metal buttons with glued in aqua foiled rhinestones. They have some moderate wear to the tops. You get 4 large buttons and 3 smaller ones. Click the picture for a close-up.

Bone china thimble made by Jones. Has a painting of a man with a long pipe on both sides and is decorated with a gold rim. It is marked Jones, The Thimble, Bone China on the inside.

These Navajo Silver Concho Buttons were hand made from Mercury Dimes. Each domed button measures 19mm in diameter, and has a wonderful hand stamped pinwheel design. They each weigh 2.5 grams for a combined total of 15.1 grams or .53 ounces. Under close inspection you can see that the buttons were stamped from Mercury Dimes and you can actually see some of the letters and writing from the coins. The buttons have a wonderful dark patina and have not been cleaned. They have shanks soldered on the backs. Sold as a set of 6. See View A, B, C, D. The Dimes were minted from 1923-1945.
