Shell Pendants
Native Americans along Coastal areas and the Mississippi River Basin were the first to collect and use American freshwater mussel pearls and shells. Pearl pendants and earrings were worn by both sexes, and both pearls and shell were used for decorative purposes on articles of clothing. Spiny oyster shell beads in several other colors are also favorites aqnd can be seen in many traditional Native American Jewelry pieces. Blacklip shells, also known as pearl oysters, have greyish green with white or yellowish radial rows of scales. Internally, the blacklip shell is very pearly with a pale blue or violet cast and reddish to black markings, you will enjoy using the beads and pendants made of this shell.
Abalone shells have a thick inner layer of the shell that is composed of nacre or mother-of-pearl, which in many species is highly iridescent and occurs in a wide range of beautiful colors. These shells are often used by Mexican Silver Craftsmen.
